Weapons are quite varied as well. Thanks to her unique background, the protagonist can handle different types of firearms, or she can go for a quieter approach with a bow and arrow, or combine them with explosive arrows. A big part of the appeal of Far Cry is the variety of weapons and ways to accomplish tasks. It looks like Frontiers of Pandora is going to deli

I recently popped down to Ubisoft’s offices just outside of London and was thrown into the multicoloured forests and floating cliffs of Pandora to do whatever I liked. There were some missions to follow as part of the preview build, but otherwise I spent two hours killing fascist military dudes, saving local inhabitants, and flying my Ikran - who I called Floof - high into the sky in search of new discoveries. There is a sense of wonder not dissimilar to the films, like you are discovering the world for the first time as a fledgling Na’vi who must also earn stripes within a tribe that has every reason not to trust them. On the surface this setting is ideal for an open-world game offering untold freedom and experimentation, but Frontiers of Pandora relies too much on past victories to ever escape their uninspiring shadow.

As mentioned before, each of the Na'vi clans resides in one of the different Pandora biomes. The Na'vi are well-adapted to their environment and often have differing physical traits as a result of their surroundings. Clans also differ greatly in culture, though will often put aside their differences in order to fight a common en

There are many ways that Ubisoft could make players pay for progression through the game. Even with the game focusing on the Na’vi people and the natural landscape of Pandora, Frontiers of Pandora can monetize cosmetics as well as the general progression through the game. From costumes to fast travel to creatures, the new Avatar game could give players plenty of opportunities to spend real mo

On the opposite end of Pandora, far from its lush natural environments, humans have begun to expand their presence on the planet at an alarming rate. The first film sets up the many interests humans have in the planet and its resources, and The Way of Water explains that, because of their technological advancements and funding from the RDA organization, they've been able to essentially build a full city on Pandora in a matter of mon

Maps in expansive story-based open-world games like Frontiers of Pandora have multiple games worth of content spread out across the world, and players may want to skip past flying to their questline’s destination. It’s not common, but a system that trades premium currency for the ability to warp to new locations could be integrated into Frontiers of Pandora to bridge the gap between these massive biomes. While it's likely that cosmetics for these vehicles and animals will be locked behind microtransactions, there's a real chance that the transport itself will be restricted as w

She does, however, Horizon Burning Shores have an unusual background. This character was part of an RDA project that involved kidnapping Na'vi children and raising them to become soldiers that fight against their own people. This puts the player in an interesting position . On the one hand, she is fully equipped to take on Pandora's wilderness, but on the other, she has to learn alongside the pla

Many Ubisoft games follow a specific format that makes grinding more like an RPG, with skill levels often hiding quests, unlockables, and increased stats. The idea of Avatars is perfect for integrating RPG elements, as inhabiting a separate body with modifiable skills is exactly what the plot of the film is about. However, a recent trend in microtransactions is allowing the player to pay instead of grind, allowing them to skip content and get an overpowered character build fas

The Avatar films are largely character-driven journeys. While they've done a lot to establish the lore and customs of Pandora, these elements of the story tend to revolve around Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their respective family and friends. The Way of Water takes this even further, introducing us to the children of Jake and Neytiri, along with a number of other significant humans and Na

With that said, gamers more or less know what to expect from a Ubisoft game in 2022, as countless memes mocking Ubisoft Assassin's Creed -esque clutter , bloat, and microtransactions have surfaced over the past few years. Whether players enjoy this approach to game design or not, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora needs to avoid taking the same approach if Ubisoft hopes to set it apart from the rest of its prolific catalog. For this upcoming Avatar game to be enjoyable and memorable, it needs to steer clear of many tropes laid out and popularized by the modern Assassin's Creed relea

In 2008, James Cameron released his ambitious blockbuster Avatar . The action-packed epic was structured around a science fiction-based allegorization for colonialism, all set against the backdrop of an alien planet called Pandora. The film was a huge success, beating Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time and elevating 3D technology to more than just a simple marketing gimmick. Although the film's initially positive reception would eventually give way to a hateful bandwagon, its success made it clear fans had not seen the last of Pandora. A sequel seemed inevitable, even if it took over a decade to m
